“From afar, some people look at my paintings and see only a block of colour. It’s more than that - it’s an intense, complicated relationship with one colour. When you really focus on a pink, a blue, or a vermilion, etc., you begin to extract the best that colour in nature can give to you.”

Inside the Studio
The Meditative Process of Noj Barker

When you step into Noj Barker’s studio, time feels different. The walls are lined with canvases dense with colour and rhythm, but the real story begins in the silence between dots. For Noj, painting has always been a meditation.
“I lose myself in the repetition,” Noj explains. “Each dot is like a mantra, each layer a new narrative. While I’m working, I can never think about the whole painting, I’m only thinking about the current dot, the current moment.”

This ritual of patience and precision is what gives his work its unique intensity. What looks, from a distance, like a surge of energy and movement, is in fact the result of thousands of quiet decisions - hours of silence distilled into colour and form.
“There’s no shortcut,” Noj says. “The process itself is the point. The stillness, the focus. The painting becomes a record of my state of mind.”
Noj’s practice is less about control and more about surrender - letting the rhythm of the dots take over, letting go of the intrusion of thoughts. As his work becomes much more visible, Noj is going through a period of transformation.
“There are two different realities, there is the “real” world and then there is the reality of my dot world and it can be very difficult to switch from one to the other, especially in this time of intense transition.”
